For small area’s such as the mildew in a bathroom, using a commercial cleaner can be done if the room is well ventilated and the mildew or mold is due to moisture from the shower building up. Found in many structures built before 1980, asbestos is often discovered during renovation, remodeling or natural disasters. Asbestos can be any of several minerals that separate into long, threadlike fibers. Because certain varieties do not burn and do not conduct heat or electricity, they were used for making fireproof materials, electrical insulation, roofing, filters, and much more. Asbestos abatement is the process of removing this material.
Although a homeowner is not required to remove it, the presence of asbestos may create a hazard if exposed, and asbestos abatement or removal may be necessary to eliminate this danger.

Is Asbestos Removal Required?
An introduction to repairing or removing asbestos material from your home.
The condition of asbestos materials, room traffic and air exchange affect the risk of asbestos exposure hazard.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommendations:
- Leave alone if material in good condition
- DO NOT TOUCH!
- Visually inspect for wear and tear, water damage, abrasions and any tears
- Damaged material may release asbestos fibers
- Before having any remodeling done, have your home checked for asbestos
When asbestos is touched, rubbed or handled in any way, fibers may be released into the air. Once the fibers are airborne you and your family are at risk of inhaling these fibers. Only damaged asbestos materials should be handled and ONLY by a professional.
There are two ways to manage an asbestos problem, repair and remove. Repairing the asbestos material involves: The first repair is sealing (encapsulation) which binds the material and coats it so that it is no longer able to become airborne. The second repair is covering (enclosure) which involves covering the material with another “safe” material, to ensure that the fibers are not released into the air.
With either of these repair methods, the asbestos remains in place and is usually cheaper than having it removed.
